Tetany = involuntary muscle contractions often occurs in the hands when you start doing breathwork. It’s often also described as dinosaur hands given the hands curling up like a T-Rex.

During the rapid and deep breathing technique, carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the blood can drop. When you breathe rapidly or deeply, you exhale more CO2 than usual. This can lead to a condition called hypocapnia, which is low levels of carbon dioxide in the blood.

Low CO2 levels can lead to a rise in blood pH, making it more alkaline. This is known as respiratory alkalosis. Alkalosis can affect the balance of electrolytes in the body, including calcium and magnesium ions, which are important for muscle function. Thereby potentially causing muscle twitching, cramps, or spasms. This is known as tetany.

What may sound a little scary to begin with is simply a temporary and harmless sensation. Shaking your hands can quickly get rid off it should it cause you discomfort during the session.

Given it arises often at the beginning of a personal breathwork journey, the symbolic explanation from practitioners is that the cramping could be associated with the holding on  to things, a sign of resistance showing you that there’s something your body wants to let go of however the mind might not be ready to do so yet – especially if breathwork is a new experience. So it’s actually a good sign if you experience it! It shows what you are doing is working. You are accessing new territory.

Whilst it is completely natural to fear losing control, try to be curious about the experience and practice surrendering to what is. You are on the floor and safe. Nothing bad can happen to you. Let yourself sink into the feel and trust your body to do its thing. Basically: Let your mind sit back and enjoy the ride!
